last Monday the 21st was called blue Monday. Scientists have figured out that it is the most depressing month of the year. It falls on the Monday of the last full week of January.
Supposedly it is based on a scientific formula. As I am not a scientist I have no idea if that makes sense or not.
With all the snow we had in the Netherlands yesterday and during the night I am sure the day did not start happy for everyone who had to go out to work this morning.
Other than that, to me it does not seem very scientific to me.
- They pick a Monday because it is the day everyone goes back to work
- January, with the Christmas lights gone from the streets it suddenly looks a lot bleaker
- mid winter so the days are short, and some people do suffer from winter depression already.
It seems fairly easy to pick this date.
Big question: are you influenced by it?
It is a scientific truth that if you give attention to something, it grows. There has been a lot of talk about Blue Monday on social media in the days leading up to it. People who might not even have been aware of this date, might now indeed have been influenced by it on the day itself. [One reason I wrote this blog post after blue Monday] If one thing did go wrong they may have said. “See it’s blue Monday, it is going to be a rotten day” From there it went from bad to worse.
This shows the power of mindset. Once you are in this negative mindset, it is really hard to break out of it. Try to start your day with a positive note. It can make such a difference. Give it a try!
I work a lot with positive affirmations in my counseling/coaching practice. If you would like to try it with some help, why not contact me.
